San Bernardino has been identified as California’s least-serene city, according to recent rankings by WalletHub. The city placed 151st out of 182 U.S. cities for overall serenity, making it the lowest-ranked city in the state. The rankings evaluated cities based on happiness and stress levels, using 29 metrics for happiness and 39 for stress, including work, financial, family, health, and safety factors.
San Bernardino ranked 135th for happiness and 164th for low-stress living. The city’s low scores were part of a broader trend in the Inland Empire, where other cities also ranked poorly. Ontario and Moreno Valley were among the bottom half, ranking 101st and 102nd overall, respectively. In contrast, Rancho Cucamonga emerged as the region’s most serene city, ranking 48th overall.
The Press-Enterprise reported that California cities closer to the coast, such as Irvine and Huntington Beach, scored better for serenity. Fremont topped the national list as the most serene city, followed by Sioux Falls, Lincoln, Overland Park, and Bismarck.
WalletHub’s analysis considered various stressors, highlighting that financial and health-related issues are significant contributors to stress in cities like San Bernardino. The rankings reflect ongoing challenges faced by residents in achieving a balanced and stress-free lifestyle.
