A lawsuit has been filed against the Rose Bowl Stadium following a violent incident during a Rüfüs Du Sol concert on August 16. Shelby Lynn Elston and her fiancé, Cain Webb, are suing the venue, alleging negligence in security management after Elston was attacked by Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala.
The altercation reportedly began over a spilled drink, leading Zavala to punch Elston, rendering her unconscious. According to KTLA, Elston was knocked out and required CPR from Webb. Zavala, identified through video footage, was arrested on August 21 but released after a judge deemed him not a public threat. He has pleaded not guilty to two felony assault charges.
The lawsuit claims the Rose Bowl Operating Company failed to provide adequate security, allowing the attack to occur without intervention. The couple seeks compensatory and punitive damages, citing physical injuries and mental anguish. Their attorney, Andrew Talebi, emphasized the venue’s responsibility to ensure patron safety.
Rüfüs Du Sol expressed heartbreak over the incident, stating that ensuring fan safety is paramount. NBC Los Angeles reported that the Rose Bowl has not commented on the pending litigation, and Zavala’s attorney maintains his client’s innocence. Zavala is scheduled to return to court later this month.
