Los Angeles police are warning the public about a surge in jewelry thefts targeting senior citizens. Over 140 incidents have been reported across the city in recent months, with thefts occurring from the San Fernando Valley to South LA. The thieves typically operate in pairs, often involving a man and a woman, who approach seniors under the guise of offering a “gift” or assistance.
According to FOX 11, the suspects often use a van and are described as middle-aged, with the woman speaking with a heavy Middle Eastern accent. They distract their victims by placing a fake gold-colored necklace around their necks while simultaneously stealing valuable jewelry. One notable victim was a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor who had her diamond necklace and ring stolen.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has issued warnings to avoid such encounters and encourages victims to report incidents. KTLA reports that the crimes usually occur during daytime hours in residential areas and involve organized groups. The suspects are generally of Caucasian descent, possibly Eastern European, and sometimes accompanied by children.
Authorities are seeking cooperation from rental companies, as the thieves often use rented vehicles. They have also discovered fake jewelry in an abandoned van at a crime scene. The LAPD advises anyone with information to contact the Mission Area Robbery Detectives or the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-222-8477.-800-222-8477
