Ride-Share, Delivery Companies Reveal Statuses Amid Massive US Storm

Several ride-share and food delivery service companies confirmed their statuses to CNN amid an ongoing massive winter storm in the United States on Sunday (January 25).

Lyft said it would largely operate as usual, but advised drivers and riders to monitor weather reports, adding that it would allow drivers to cancel rides without penalties if they feel unsafe. Grubhub said it my pause deliveries in certain regions due to bad weather or continue operations “on a rolling basis” with others in regions impacted taking longer.

DoorDash also said it was considering or adjusting local operations, allowing customers to place pick-up orders or implement a “Weather Impact Fee” that goes to drivers. CNN said that Uber didn’t immediately respond to its request for comment.

More than 10,000 U.S. flights have been cancelled as of Sunday morning amid ongoing winter storms, according to Flightaware.com. A total 10,183 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled as of 10:20 a.m. ET on Sunday.

More than 844,000 Americans were reported to be without power as of Sunday morning amid an ongoing winter storm combining snow, ice and freezing temperatures, according to PowerOutage.us.

A total 844,440 U.S. customers were reported to be without power as of 10:20 a.m. ET, which included 300,202 in Tennessee, the most of any state, followed by Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Alabama. Nashville Electric Service issued a statement obtained by CNN confirming that its utility crews were operating in “extended 14-16 hour” continuous rotations “to ensure we can continue responding to outages quickly.”

An estimated 245 million people in 40 states are expected to be impacted by what is predicted to be a historic winter storm.
