Big Lots is reopening nearly 80 stores this week across nine states as part of a fourth wave of reopenings following the retailer’s bankruptcy filing. These stores, like over 100 others that have reopened this year, are now under new management. The reopening is part of a deal where Gordon Brothers Retail Partners and Variety Wholesalers acquired some former Big Lots locations, which will continue to operate under the original branding.
The latest wave of reopenings is scheduled for Thursday (June 5), adding to the Big Lots footprint that will now include 220 stores. This is a significant reduction from the more than 1,300 locations that were open around this time last year. According to Yahoo News, grand opening celebrations for these stores are planned for the fall.
While some former Big Lots storefronts will not be reopening, they are finding new uses. Other retailers, such as Ocean State Job Lot and Ollie’s Bargain Market, have announced plans to take over some of these locations. Additionally, a pickleball facility is set to open in a former Big Lots location in Denver by the end of the year.
