Residents Take Down Intruder Who Tried To Sexually Assault Sleeping Girl

A Hackensack, New Jersey man faces serious criminal charges after he allegedly broke into a home through a bathroom window and tried to sexually assault a sleeping girl before residents of the home stopped him.

Jermin Fordyce, 36, of Hackensack, was charged with first-degree home invasion, first-degree burglary, first-degree attempted aggravated sexual assault, and second-degree aggravated assault, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hackensack police responded to a report of a home invasion and burglary at around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday (March 21). When officers arrived, they found Fordyce already subdued by the residents inside the home.

Investigators say Fordyce climbed through a bathroom window to get inside the residence. He then made his way into the bedroom of the girl, who was asleep at the time. Once in the room, he removed his pants, climbed on top of the sleeping girl, and attempted to sexually assault her. During the attack, he also strangled her.

According to prosecutors, other residents inside the home woke up when they heard sounds of a struggle coming from the girl’s room. They went to the room and were able to overpower and capture Fordyce, holding him until police arrived.

Fordyce was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered when residents subdued him, prosecutors said. After receiving treatment, he was taken into custody by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department.

He is currently awaiting a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack. An attorney for Fordyce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
