Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat known for his role as a House manager in President Donald Trump’s 2021 impeachment trial, has announced his candidacy for California governor. He made the announcement on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday night, emphasizing his commitment to helping Californians prosper. Swalwell stated, “Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector,” highlighting his plans to lower prices and raise wages.
Swalwell, first elected to Congress in 2012, has been a prominent critic of President Trump, often appearing on cable news to voice his opposition. In his campaign announcement, Swalwell expressed his readiness to “bring this fight home,” citing concerns about Trump’s impact on California, including militarizing streets and canceling climate projects.
Swalwell joins a crowded field of candidates aiming to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited. Other Democratic contenders include former Rep. Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra. The primary election, set for June, will determine the top two candidates who will advance to the November general election.
Swalwell’s announcement follows recent tensions between Trump and ABC, including the president’s call to remove Kimmel from the air. Swalwell’s campaign video underscores his focus on resisting the president and making California more affordable.
