Regional Chain Beats National Giants As America’s Top Grocery Store

H-E-B, the Texas-based regional chain, topped several national giants to be named America’s top grocery store for 2026 by dunnhumby.

H-E-B ranked first for the fifth time in nine years, followed by the New England-based Market Basket and the Wisconsin-based Woodman’s, based on dunnhumby‘s Retailer Preference Index, which it described as “a comprehensive, nationwide study that examines the approximately $1 trillion U.S. grocery market.” Several popular national chains were included in the top 10, which was rounded out with Costco at No. 4; Aldi at No. 5; Winco Foods at No. 6; Trader Joes at No. 7; Amazon at No. 8; Wegman’s at No. 9 and ShopRite at No. 10.

The RPI found that 41% of grocery stores’ long-term success was based on “saving customers money” through competitive pricing, promotions and rewards, which saw a three-point increase from the previous year, setting a new record. The study found that stores who offer the best savings consistently found the best long-term market success.

“2025 threw a lot of curveballs at the U.S. consumer. Shopper confidence dropped as concerns about higher prices, fewer job opportunities, and stagnant wages eroded purchasing power. Consumers across all income levels are feeling the squeeze and making more price-conscious choices,” said Matt O’Grady, President of the Americas for dunnhumby. “In this environment, building trust with American shoppers has never been more critical.”
