Record Number Of Americans Expected To Travel This Holiday Season

AAA forecasts a record 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the year-end holiday period from December 20 to January 1. This marks a 2.2% increase over last year’s record of 119.7 million travelers, according to AAA’s projections.

The majority of travelers, about 109.5 million, will drive to their destinations, benefiting from gas prices that have fallen below $3 per gallon for the first time in four years. AAA emphasizes safety on the roads, especially during National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and urges drivers to plan safe rides home.

Air travel is also expected to reach new heights, with over 8 million Americans flying domestically, a 2.3% increase from last year. However, travelers should be prepared for higher costs, as domestic flight prices have risen by 7%, averaging nearly $900 per ticket. The busiest travel days will be just before Christmas, while flying on the holiday itself is generally cheaper.

Travel by bus, train, and cruise is anticipated to rise by 9%, with 4.9 million people opting for these modes of transportation. The demand for cruises has surged post-pandemic, contributing to this increase.

The busiest days for travel are expected to be December 20 and 21, with significant congestion anticipated on major routes. AAA suggests that December 24, 25, 31, and January 1 will be the least busy days for travel.
