Record Heat, Storms Expected in Southern California

Southern California residents are preparing for potentially record-breaking heat and thunderstorms over the next few days. According to the National Weather Service, dramatic warming is expected today and Friday (May 30), with temperatures climbing into the high 90s and possibly reaching 100 degrees in some areas. This heat wave could set new daily records, especially in places like Paso Robles, where the current record is 102 degrees.

The high pressure over the region is causing these elevated temperatures, but it is also affecting air quality. Areas like Redlands, Banning, and Perris are expected to have air quality categorized as Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Meanwhile, El Monte, Whittier, and Anaheim will experience moderate conditions, and coastal areas will enjoy good air quality.

As the weekend approaches, a shift to low pressure is expected to bring cooler temperatures and a chance of isolated thunderstorms and showers, particularly in the mountains, deserts, foothill communities, and possibly some valley areas. Cooler weather is anticipated to continue into at least midweek.
