Rebuilding After Fires: All-Electric Homes Could Save Thousands

Homeowners in Los Angeles County who are rebuilding after devastating wildfires may find financial relief by opting for all-electric homes. A report from the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment indicates that choosing all-electric construction could save homeowners up to $9,000 compared to rebuilding with both electricity and natural gas.

The wildfires, which struck areas like Pacific Palisades and Altadena in January, caused an estimated $131 billion in damage and destroyed over 16,000 properties. In response, LA Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive order to expedite rebuilding efforts, temporarily waiving a city ordinance that mandates all-electric new constructions. However, the UC Berkeley report argues that rebuilding with all-electric systems is not only more cost-effective but also faster and safer.

All-electric homes eliminate the need for gas line installations and safety checks, which can delay construction. They also promise lower utility bills, with savings of up to $540 annually, according to BDC Network. Additionally, these homes reduce risks associated with gas appliances, such as carbon monoxide exposure and indoor air pollution.

The report encourages policymakers to support all-electric rebuilding, aligning with LA County’s climate goals to become carbon neutral by 2045. Mayor Bass has already taken steps to streamline permitting for all-electric rebuilds, as noted in PV Magazine USA. Construction has begun in some affected areas, with several homeowners opting for all-electric solutions.

As LA County continues its recovery, the push for all-electric homes could serve as a model for sustainable rebuilding practices in the face of climate change.
