Rapidly Growing Silver Fire Near Bishop Triggers Evacuations

A rapidly growing wildfire, known as the Silver Fire, near Bishop, California, has prompted mandatory evacuations for parts of Inyo and Mono counties. The fire ignited around 2:11 p.m. on Sunday near Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, just north of Bishop. By 8 p.m., it had burned 1,000 acres and was 0% contained, threatening nearby structures and power lines.

Evacuation orders are in place for several communities, including Laws in Inyo County, Chalfant in Mono County, and the White Mountain Estates neighborhood. A 30-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 6 has been closed to ensure public safety. Strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph at Bishop Airport, have complicated firefighting efforts, grounding some aircraft. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, forecasting southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 65 mph.

Cal Fire crews from San Bernardino and Riverside Counties are battling the flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay informed and follow evacuation orders.

Cal Fire and ABC7 provide updates on the fire’s status and containment efforts.
