Prop 50 Supporters’ Funds Strain State Reporting System

With just a week remaining before the vote, supporters of Proposition 50 in California have raised a staggering $129 million, more than double the $46 million reported by opponents. The financial disparity has grown significantly in recent weeks, leading to challenges in the state’s campaign finance reporting system. According to Yahoo News, the overwhelming contributions, primarily led by a committee headed by Governor Gavin Newsom, have caused delays in the availability of campaign finance reports on the state’s website. The latest report, due on Thursday, was only made available on Monday.

Governor Newsom, who has been the face of the campaign, even asked his supporters to stop donating, stating, “We have hit our budget goals and raised what we need in order to pass Proposition 50.” The campaign has spent $77 million, mostly on television ads, and has featured prominent figures like former President Barack Obama in its advertisements.

CalMatters reports that the proposition aims to temporarily gerrymander California’s congressional districts to favor Democrats, in response to similar efforts by Republicans in other states. The Yes campaign has garnered support from major contributors, including billionaire Tom Steyer and the House Majority PAC, while the No campaign relies heavily on donations from Charles Munger Jr. and the Congressional Leadership Fund.

Despite the financial advantage, recent polling indicates the race remains close, with many voters undecided. Both sides are intensifying efforts to persuade voters, particularly focusing on Latino voters who could be pivotal in the election. The outcome of Proposition 50 will be decided on November 4.
