President Donald Trump announced that the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will take over key responsibilities from the Department of Education. Trump emphasized that essential programs like Pell Grants and Title I funding will be preserved and managed by other departments.
This decision follows an executive order signed by Trump to begin dismantling the Education Department.
The SBA, led by Kelly Loeffler, will manage the $1.8 trillion student loan portfolio, a major component of the Education Department’s duties. Trump stated that this transition would happen “immediately” and assured that it would not disrupt loan repayments.
“We have a portfolio that’s very large, lots of loans, tens of thousands of loans, pretty complicated deal, and that’s coming out of the Department of Education immediately, and it’s going to be headed up by Kelly Loeffler, SBA, in the role set for it,” Trump told reporters.
HHS, under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will oversee programs for students with disabilities and nutrition programs. This move has drawn criticism from advocates for students with disabilities, who express concerns about Kennedy’s past statements on vaccines and autism.
While the full dismantling of the Education Department requires congressional approval, Trump plans to redistribute its functions to other federal agencies.
