President Donald Trump announced a controversial proposal on Tuesday (February 4) to relocate all Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries and have the United States take control of the area. Speaking at a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump suggested that the US would manage the dismantling of unexploded bombs and other weapons, level destroyed buildings, and develop the region economically to create jobs and housing.
Trump emphasized that the approximately two million Gaza residents would be relocated during a transitional phase and would not have the right to return.
“Just can’t go back. If you go back, it’s going to end up the same way it has for 100 years,” Trump said.
The president also mentioned the possibility of deploying U.S. troops if necessary and envisioned the area as “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
Netanyahu supported the idea, calling it a potential historical change and expressing hope for a different future for the troubled region.
“President Trump is taking it to a much higher level. He sees a different future for that piece of land that has been the focus of so much terrorism.”
“I think it’s worth paying attention to this. We’re talking about it,” he added.
Despite Trump’s optimism, Egyptian and Jordanian leaders have already rejected the idea of accepting Gazans. However, Trump expressed confidence that they would eventually agree, believing Gazans would welcome the opportunity to live in a safer, more secure community.
The proposal follows a recent cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel, with Trump warning of increased US violence if Hamas fails to release hostages taken during the October 2023 attack.
