President Trump Says Tariffs On Canada, China And Mexico To Start Next Week

President Donald Trump announced that new tariffs on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico could begin next week. The tariffs, which include a 25% duty on goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10% duty on Chinese imports, are part of Trump’s strategy to combat the flow of illegal drugs, such as fentanyl, into the United States. These measures were first outlined in executive orders issued on February 1, 2025, as detailed in a White House fact sheet.

The tariffs are set to take effect Tuesday (March 4) and will apply to all imports except Canadian energy resources, which will face a 10% tariff. Goods already in transit to the U.S. before February 1, 2025, are exempt. According to NBC News, President Trump stated on his Truth Social app that these tariffs are necessary to stop the harm caused by illicit drugs.

The tariffs are expected to remain in place indefinitely until the president decides to remove them. The affected countries have signaled their intention to retaliate, potentially escalating trade tensions.

As markets react to the news, analysts express concern over the uncertainty these tariffs introduce, which could impact global investment and consumer spending. The tariffs are part of Trump’s broader approach to using economic measures to address foreign policy disputes, extending beyond traditional trade concerns.
