President Trump Says He’s ‘Not Happy’ With Iran As Peace Talks Stall

President Donald Trump said on Friday (May 1) that he is “not happy” after recent talks with Iran failed to yield progress toward ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries. The comments came as the United States reached the 60-day mark of military operations in Iran, a deadline set by the War Powers Resolution of 1973 for presidential military action without Congressional approval.

President Trump told reporters at the White House, “We just had a conversation with Iran. Let’s see what happens. But I would say that I am not happy.” He added that Iranian leadership is “very disjointed” and “argumentative with each other,” noting, “They come back—one says one thing, one says another. They’re very confused.”

The ceasefire, announced earlier this month, continues while negotiations remain deadlocked.

The latest Iranian proposal to end the war was delivered through mediators on Thursday. However, Trump described the plan as a “non-starter” and stated that all options, including further military strikes, remain on the table. He said, “They’re asking for things that I can’t agree to,” and emphasized that the U.S. position remains firm on Iran never acquiring a nuclear weapon.

While the Trump administration has insisted Iran give up its pursuit of nuclear weapons, Tehran has made reopening the Strait of Hormuz a priority in negotiations. Details of Iran’s proposal remain unclear, but a reported offer for a 15- to 20-year moratorium on uranium enrichment has not met Washington’s demands.

The president also voiced skepticism about the War Powers Resolution’s application, calling the 60-day limit on military engagement “totally unconstitutional.” He pointed out that previous presidents have ignored the limit, and said, “It’s never been used; it’s never been adhered to.”

The Senate has failed six times to advance a resolution requiring an end to military operations in Iran, with some Republicans now joining Democrats in calling for Congressional oversight.
