President Trump Orders Troops To Protect ICE Facilities In Portland

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday (September 27) that he intends to send U.S. troops to Portland, Oregon, in response to ongoing anti-ICE protests. The decision, made at the request of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, aims to protect the city and ICE facilities from what Trump describes as threats from Antifa and other domestic groups. He authorized the use of “full force, if necessary” to address the situation, as reported on Politico.

The announcement has sparked significant backlash from local leaders. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stated that there is no national security threat in Portland and emphasized that the community remains safe and calm. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson expressed concern about the influx of federal agents, noting that their presence was not requested by the city. Democracy Docket reports that city and state officials have not been informed of the mission’s purpose.

This move follows a recent incident in Dallas where a gunman attacked an ICE facility, resulting in one death and two injuries. In response, Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered increased security at ICE locations nationwide. Despite the president’s claims of a city “under siege,” Portland has recently seen smaller, peaceful protests rather than large-scale violence.
