President Trump Halts Enforcement Of Foreign Bribery Law: ‘It’s A Disaster’

President Donald Trump announced a pause in the enforcement of the U.S. law that criminalizes bribery of foreign officials, calling it “a disaster.” The decision has sparked significant controversy and debate over its implications for international business practices and U.S. foreign policy.

The law in question, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), was enacted in 1977 to prohibit U.S. companies and individuals from bribing foreign officials to gain or retain business. It has been a cornerstone of U.S. efforts to combat global corruption.

President Trump criticized the FCPA, arguing that it puts American businesses at a disadvantage compared to their international competitors. He stated that the law is overly burdensome and hinders U.S. companies from competing effectively in the global market.

Attorney General Pam Bondi will have 180 days to review the law and offer revised enforcement guidelines.

Critics of the decision have expressed concern that pausing enforcement of the FCPA could lead to increased corruption and undermine the U.S.’s reputation as a leader in promoting ethical business practices. They argue that the law is essential for maintaining a level playing field in international commerce and preventing corrupt practices.

The pause in enforcement is expected to face legal challenges and opposition from various stakeholders, including lawmakers and advocacy groups committed to fighting corruption.
