‘PORN’ Signs Spark Debate in Huntington Beach

Campaign signs with the word “PORN” in large letters have stirred controversy in Huntington Beach. These signs, part of a campaign against Measures A and B, appeared across the city ahead of a special election on June 10. The measures will determine control over the city’s public libraries.

The signs, which read “Protect Our Kids From Porn,” have drawn criticism, especially from parents concerned about their placement near schools. According to LAist, some parents expressed frustration that the signs prompted children to search for the term online.

City Councilmember Chad Williams, who is behind the campaign, defended the signs, stating, “The bottom line is there’s pornography that’s available to minors in our public library.” Williams argues that the issue needs addressing and that the signs aim to bring attention to this concern.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the controversy stems from a 2023 decision by the city government to establish a board to review children’s books for inappropriate content. Measure A seeks to repeal this board, while Measure B would prevent the privatization of library services.

Despite backlash, Williams remains firm in his stance, though some community members, including supporters, have criticized the campaign’s approach. The Huntington Beach Police Department has received complaints about vandalized signs, with two individuals cited for removing parts of them.
