Fast-food chain Steak ‘n Shake has announced plans to remove all microwaves from its 390 U.S. restaurants by April 15, 2026, as part of its ongoing effort to improve food quality.
“Steak n Shake is removing all microwaves from its restaurants. We expect every unit to be microwave-free by April 15. Quality restaurants don’t need microwaves,” the fast-food chain wrote in a post on X. “It is part of our journey to improve food quality and use traditional methods of cooking only. Eat Real Food.”
The microwave ban represents the latest in a series of quality-focused changes at Steak ‘n Shake. Last year, the chain transitioned to using 100 percent all-natural beef tallow for cooking, eliminating seed oils from its restaurants. In December, the company switched to a2 milk, which is marketed as easier on digestion than conventional milk containing both A1 and A2 proteins. About a month later, President Donald Trump signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act into law, reflecting renewed attention to nutrition and ingredient quality.
The timing of these changes aligns with a broader movement toward food quality in the fast-food industry.
