Norwegian Cruise Line is facing backlash after changing its laid back dining dress code rules.
Passengers are now banned from wearing shorts and flip-flops at the cruise line’s upscale restaurants Palomar, Ocean Blue, Onda, Cagney’s, Le Bistro and Haven, according to an update shared on its policy page.
“We love a laid-back vibe, with just a few easy guidelines,” Norwegian Cruise Line wrote while listing its guidelines which also included banning attire with offensive language or images; requiring cover-ups; shirts, and footwear; and not permitting “certain items such as tank tops, hoodies, robes, shorts, jeans with holes or tears, and caps/hats” depending on the restaurant.
The policy changes were scrutinized by many Norwegian Cruise Line customers, with one Facebook user who claimed to have been on 15 cruises calling it an “idiotic rule.”
“Been on 15 cruises with Norwegian, loved the relaxed style. Tell the fuddy daddies where to go. You will lose me as a customer going to this NEW IDIOTIC RULE,” the post stated.
“How does someone else wearing flip flops have any impact on you?” a Redditor asked in response to another user who appeared to be in favor of the rule change.
“No shorts or flip flops in the Haven is not a fair or reasonable change, especially for Summer/hot weather ports,” a third customer wrote.
Norwegian Cruise Line passengers are still allowed to dress casually when dining at the buffet or other specialty restaurants, according to the company’s website.
