A recent Wall Street Journal-NORC poll reveals that faith in the American dream is waning among U.S. adults. Only 31% believe that hard work can still lead to success, while 46% think it once held true but no longer does. Additionally, 23% say the American dream never held true. This marks the highest level of skepticism in nearly 15 years of polling, according to the Journal.
The survey, conducted between July 10 and July 23, 2025, has a margin of error of +/- 3.39 percentage points. It highlights growing concerns about economic challenges, with many respondents expressing worries about the rising cost of groceries. According to Yahoo News, 66% of those surveyed have switched to cheaper products to manage grocery expenses.
The poll also indicates that only 25% of respondents feel they have a good chance of improving their standard of living, a record low since 1987. Furthermore, a significant majority believe it is more difficult to purchase a home compared to their parents’ generation. Specifically, 58% find it much harder to buy a home today.
These findings reflect a broader sentiment of economic unease and a diminishing belief in upward mobility, posing challenges for policymakers and leaders seeking to address these concerns.
