New York Magazine political correspondent Olivia Nuzzi has reportedly been placed on leave over an alleged affair with married former Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Status News initially reported, which was confirmed by New York Magazine in response to its questioning.
“Recently our Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged to the magazine’s editors that she had engaged in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was reporting on the campaign, a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures,” a spokesperson said.
“Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign,” the spokesperson added. “An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”
The alleged relationship between Nuzzi, 31, and Kennedy, 70, reportedly didn’t start until after a November 2023 profile she wrote on the former presidential candidate was published and she didn’t use him as a source while covering the 2024 campaign, a source close to Nuzzi told Status. A second source with knowledge of the situation claims the alleged relationship is believed to have started around the new year.
Nuzzi, who was named to Forbes’ 2018 ’30 under 30′ list and a finalist for the 2023 National Magazine Award for feature writing, was engaged to Politico chief Washington correspondent Ryan Lizza in 2022. Kennedy, who recently announced his decision to end his campaign and endorse former President Donald Trump, is married to actress Cheryl Hines, best known for her role in the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm.
