LAKE BALBOA (CNS) – Authorities Thursday sought the public’s help to identify a man suspected of racing another driver and fleeing the scene after that man fatally crashed in Lake Balboa.
The driver of a BMW sedan was westbound on Victory Boulevard near White Oak Avenue when he encountered a Tesla about 12:30 a.m. Saturday “and engaged in speed racing, traveling westbound Victory Boulevard … at a high rate of speed,” according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The man driving the Tesla lost control of the car and collided with a light pole and a tree near Victory and Encino Avenue.
The driver of the BMW stopped and “without exiting the vehicle, observed the aftermath of the collision and sped off,” police said. He was last seen westbound on Victory Boulevard.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and pronounced the driver of the Tesla dead. His identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, though police noted he was approximately 35 years old.
The driver of the BMW is being sought for felony hit-and-run. His description was unavailable but the car was described as a 2011 to 2015 BMW M3 or M5 that has been lowered and has a modified exhaust and built-in spoiler.
