Police Respond To Active Shooting At Colorado Apartment Complex

Authorities in Broomfield, Colorado, responded to reports of an active shooter at the Arista Flats apartments on Thursday (September 12) morning.

The police evacuated some people from the area and ordered other residents to shelter in place.

“The surrounding area is NOT SAFE,” the Broomfield Police Department wrote on X. “To repeat! This is an ACTIVE SCENE and is NOT SAFE! As soon as a secure staging area is established by officers it will be shared here. Shots are still being fired,” they wrote in a follow-up post just after 8 a.m.

Officials said that the SWAT team, Crisis Negotiators, and surrounding law enforcement have been called in to assist with the situation.

As of 9:40 a.m., police said “the situation HAS NOT been resolved” and asked people to continue to shelter in place.

Kayla Leavitt, who works at a restaurant across the street from the apartment complex, told the Colorado Sun that one of the servers heard at least 20 gunshots.

Just before 10:15 a.m., police said that a suspect was taken into custody and called the scene “secure.”

“The SUSPECT is in CUSTODY. The scene is now SECURE. Suspect and one victim transported to a local hospital. Conditions unknown.” the department said on X.
