A tragic shooting occurred at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (February 22), resulting in the deaths of a police officer and the gunman. Officer Andrew Duarte of the West York Borough Police Department was killed while responding to a mutual aid call at the hospital. The gunman also died during the incident, but no patients were harmed, according to hospital officials.
Officer Duarte, a six-year law enforcement veteran, joined the West York Borough Police Department in 2022 after serving five years with the Denver Police Department in Colorado.
“We all have broken hearts and are grieving at his loss,” said West York Borough Manager Shawn Mauck.
The incident began when police received a call about an active shooter at 10:43 a.m. Law enforcement quickly responded, and the threat was neutralized. The hospital is now secure, and an investigation is underway.
“I’ve been briefed on the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County and I am on my way to the scene. The hospital is now secure and members of the @PAStatePolice and @PEMAHQ are on the ground responding alongside our local and federal partners,” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wrote on X.
