Police Officer Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Man Near RNC Venue

A police officer from Colombus, Ohio, on special assignment working the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, fatally shot a knife-wielding man just outside the security perimeter for the event.

Witnesses told WISN that two homeless men got into a fight in King Park, which is about one mile from Fiserv Forum. During the fight, one of the men pulled out a knife, prompting a massive police response.

During the response, the police opened fire, killing the man, who was known in the area by the nickname Jehovah, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported. He lived in a nearby tent encampment and cared for a pit bull named Isis. Officers were seen removing a dog from the encampment after the shooting.

It is unclear how many officers opened fire, with some outlets reporting just one officer discharged his weapon, while others report that witnesses saw multiple officers draw their guns and start shooting.

There is a massive police presence in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, with officers from other states flying in to assist with the massive security footprint. Following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the Secret Service “strengthened” the security plan for the four-day event.
