Plane Aborts Landing To Avoid Another Jet At Reagan National Airport

An American Airlines flight was forced to abort its landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday (February 25) to avoid another aircraft departing from the same runway. The incident involved American Flight 2246, which was arriving from Boston around 8:20 a.m. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) instructed the pilot to perform a go-around to maintain safe separation between the planes.

A go-around is a routine maneuver that allows an aircraft to safely make an alternate landing. The incident occurred less than a month after a midair collision near the same airport resulted in 67 fatalities, and about 90 minutes before another close call in Chicago.

The FAA stated that the go-around was necessary to ensure separation between the American Airlines flight and a preceding departure. The National Transportation Safety Board did not immediately comment on the incident.

This event highlights ongoing concerns about air traffic safety, especially in crowded airspaces like Washington, D.C. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the importance of pilots following air traffic control instructions, warning that licenses could be revoked for non-compliance. The FAA continues to investigate a series of recent aviation incidents across North America.
