The eagerly anticipated “Pip Watch 2025” is set to begin at the Big Bear bald eagle nest, where Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagle pair, have been incubating three eggs since late January. March 1 marks 38 days since Jackie laid the first egg, a critical time when hatching might begin if the eggs are viable.
A “pip” is the small opening that appears on an egg as a chick starts to break through the shell, signaling the start of hatching. This exciting period is closely monitored by bird enthusiasts worldwide, thanks to a camera maintained by the Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization dedicated to nature conservation in the area. The camera provides a 24/7 view of the nest, allowing viewers to observe the eagles’ daily activities and eagerly await the first signs of hatching.
Jackie laid her first egg on January 22, followed by the second on January 25, and the third on January 28. The eagles practice delayed incubation, meaning the exact timing of the hatching can vary. However, previous eggs from Jackie and Shadow have typically hatched around the 38-day mark, although nature can be unpredictable.
As reported by NBC Los Angeles, the Friends of Big Bear Valley provide regular updates on the eagles, offering both engaging and educational content for those following the event. This year’s Pip Watch has captured the attention of thousands of fans, all hoping to witness the emergence of one, two, or even three eaglets.
The previous successful hatching from Jackie and Shadow was in 2022, when a chick named Spirit was born. With the start of Pip Watch 2025, there is renewed excitement and hope for the arrival of new eaglets in the coming days.
