Pete Hegseth Allows Troops To Carry Personal Firearms On Bases

On Thursday (April 2), War Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memo that could change the security landscape on U.S. military bases. The new directive allows service members to request permission to carry personal firearms for self-defense, marking a significant shift in base security policy. This change comes amid increasing concerns about threats on U.S. installations.

The memo instructs installation commanders to assume approval when troops request to carry privately owned firearms, reversing previous policies that restricted personal weapons to law enforcement or training. Hegseth announced the policy shift on social media, emphasizing the Second Amendment rights of American citizens. He stated, “Our warfighters are no less entitled to exercise their God-given right to keep and bear arms than any other American.”

The directive mandates that any denial of a request to carry a firearm must be issued in writing with a detailed explanation. This policy places new accountability on commanders and expands the number of armed personnel on base. However, it raises questions about enforcement, safety, and how armed personnel will operate alongside existing security forces.

This policy change follows a series of shootings on military installations, including a 2019 incident at Naval Air Station Pensacola that killed three U.S. sailors. More recent incidents at Fort Stewart and Holloman Air Force Base have renewed concerns about response times during attacks. Hegseth highlighted these events, saying, “Recent events like what happened at Fort Stewart, Holloman Air Force Base or Pensacola Naval Air Station have made clear that some threats are closer to home than we would like.”
