Pentagon Reports Over 750 U.S. Troops Wounded In Iran Conflict

The Pentagon has confirmed that more than 750 U.S. service members have been wounded since the start of military operations against Iran that began in February. The Defense Department updated its casualty database on Wednesday (August 19), adding more than 50 additional wounded soldiers to the count.

According to data from The Defense Casualty Analysis System, the combined totals for Operation Epic Fury and the “Overseas Operations” category show 757 service members wounded and 18 killed since the U.S. launched the war against Iran on February 28. The new figures come as peace talks between Washington and Tehran remain stalled.

President Donald Trump told Congress about the renewed conflict with Iran in a War Powers Act notification on July 7, the same day the Pentagon created its “Overseas Operations” casualty category. That date aligns with when the U.S. military resumed airstrikes against Iran after it targeted shipping tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has not provided additional details about the conflict categories or specified which operations the casualties occurred in.

The updated casualty numbers follow weeks of scrutiny after the Pentagon drew criticism from media outlets and lawmakers when killed and wounded numbers decreased in the database last month as Iranian attacks continued. Four deaths and dozens of injuries temporarily disappeared from the totals in July before being restored. The Defense Department attributed the decreases to “temporary data disruptions” in a social media post at the time.

The Pentagon has been slow to disclose wounded troops throughout the conflict with Iran, with officials citing security needs as the reason for delays.

On Wednesday (August 19), President Trump claimed the situation with Iran is “so good” right now, even as he has paused U.S. negotiations with Tehran. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of tension in the ongoing war.
