Passengers Evacuate On The Runway Using Emergency Slides After Engine Fire

Passengers on a SWISS International Air Lines flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, to Zurich, Switzerland, were evacuated on Sunday (April 26) after one of the plane’s engines caught fire during takeoff. The incident led to minor injuries for four passengers and a crew member, who received medical attention following the emergency evacuation.

The Airbus A330-300, operating as flight LX147, was carrying 228 passengers and four infants when the engine failure occurred as the aircraft accelerated down the runway. The crew immediately stopped the plane and deployed emergency slides, allowing most passengers to exit quickly

Delhi’s airport authorities declared an emergency and responded swiftly. Runway operations resumed shortly after, and all other flights continued as scheduled at India’s busiest airport.

SWISS stated that the safety of passengers and crew was their top priority and described the event as distressing for all involved. Ground staff assisted with re-booking and hotel accommodation, and a crisis unit was set up. Technical experts have been dispatched to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and investigate the cause of the fire/

The airline is working closely with local authorities as the investigation continues. No further details about the injured passengers have been released at this time.
