A mobile lounge collided with a dock at Washington Dulles International Airport on Monday (November 10), resulting in 18 passengers being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. as the vehicle, which transports passengers between terminals and concourses, approached Concourse D at an angle, according to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).
Passengers were able to exit the mobile lounge using stairs, and emergency personnel evaluated them for injuries. Initially, reports indicated that eight people were hospitalized, but the number was later updated to 18. The MWAA confirmed that the airport remains operational despite the incident.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, and the MWAA has not disclosed any significant damage to airport infrastructure. The mobile lounges, which have been in use since 1959, are 54 feet long and 16 feet wide, and can carry up to 102 passengers.
The airport is located about 26 miles west of Washington, D.C., serving the Washington metropolitan area. People noted that there have been at least 16 similar incidents involving mobile lounges at Dulles over the past decade.
The MWAA is expected to investigate the incident further to determine its cause and assess any potential damage.
