Pasadena Filed Suit to Hold UCLA to Rose Bowl Lease

PASADENA (CNS) — The city of Pasadena has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking to hold UCLA to its long-term lease at the historic Rose Bowl, the longtime home of the Bruins football team.

In a statement Thursday, city officials called the action “an unfortunate but necessary step” to enforce the lease agreement, which runs through 2044 and “explicitly states there is no option for UCLA to terminate the lease early.”

The move follows reports that UCLA has explored relocating its home games to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, a proposal Pasadena officials say would violate the existing contract.

According to the city, UCLA representatives recently notified both Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company of the university’s intent to take steps that would breach the agreement, which was originally signed in 2010 and amended in 2014.

“The city expects UCLA will honor the terms of the agreement,” the statement said. “Pasadena will do everything in its power to protect the city’s contractual rights on behalf of the public interest, its residents, and the region.”

Officials added that Pasadena has been a “dedicated partner” to UCLA for more than 40 years, investing significant time and financial resources into upgrades and renovations at the Rose Bowl, including more than $150 million in improvements over the last decade.

The Rose Bowl, famously known as “the granddaddy of them all” for its annual New Year’s Day college football game, has hosted UCLA home games since 1982.
