Authorities in Philadelphia are looking for a woman who shot a seven-month-old child in the leg. The Philadelphia Police Department said that a woman walked up behind a couple pushing a stroller through the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia just before 6 p.m. on Thursday (July 17).
The woman fired two shots, causing the boy’s father to run away, while the boy’s mother stayed with her child. The woman then walked past the two but turned around and fired another shot at point-blank range before cursing at the woman and running away.
By the time the police arrived, both of the parents had fled the scene, leaving their infant son alone.
A neighbor rushed the baby to the hospital in their private vehicle. The police then transferred the boy to another hospital, where he is in stable condition.
“When I find out the baby was seven months and, both parents said they have warrants. They got out the car and I took the baby. I just felt like I had to protect this child. It was overwhelming. It was scary. This person came up and didn’t care with no remorse and just fired and walked away like nothing happened,” the man who drove the baby to the hospital told WCAU.
Officers located the baby’s parents about an hour later and took them into custody for questioning. The parents do not live in the neighborhood, and investigators do not know why they were there.
Officials are trying to identify the suspect and released surveillance footage from the shooting.
