On her first day as U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi established a “Weaponization Working Group” to review investigations involving President Donald Trump. The group will examine cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, as well as a civil fraud case by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Bondi’s directive aims to identify instances of “politicized justice” and “prosecutorial abuse” in these cases.
The review will be led by the Office of the Attorney General and supported by the Deputy Attorney General. It will provide quarterly reports to the White House on its progress. Bondi’s actions align with President Trump’s agenda to address what he perceives as the justice system’s weaponization against him.
Bondi’s memo also calls for a review of the DOJ’s investigation into the January 6 Capitol riot and alleged FBI targeting of Catholics. She has vowed to prosecute “bad” prosecutors and ensure that DOJ attorneys adhere to the Trump administration’s policies.
Bondi’s directives have sparked concerns about the Justice Department’s independence, with critics fearing political motivations. However, Bondi assured lawmakers during her confirmation hearing that prosecutions would be based on facts and law, not politics.
The working group will also examine the federal cooperation in Trump’s New York investigations and review the DOJ’s prosecutions of anti-abortion protesters. Bondi’s initiatives reflect her commitment to President Trump’s agenda and her promise to restore order and integrity to the Justice Department.
