Over 150 Leads in Palisades Fire Investigation

Federal investigators have gathered more than 150 leads in their search for the cause of the Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7 in Pacific Palisades. According to a Wednesday update from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), these leads have been sourced from homeowners, witnesses, and various video footage. The videos were captured by residents, state-owned cameras, and social media posts. Acting special agent in charge of the ATF’s Los Angeles field division, Jose Medina, stated that investigators have interviewed individuals who called 911, as well as the first responders who arrived at the scene. They have also spoken with responders to a smaller fire that occurred in the same area on January 1.

Medina urged hikers who were near Skull Rock on the morning of January 7 to contact investigators, emphasizing that any observations, even if seemingly insignificant, could be valuable. When asked if the rekindling of the January 1 fire might be the cause, Medina noted that investigators are not leaning towards any specific conclusion yet. They are evaluating all evidence and have not made any determinations.

The investigation continues as Southern California experiences fluctuating weather conditions, with diminishing Santa Ana winds and increasing humidity expected in the coming days. However, another Santa Ana wind event is forecasted for early next week, which could exacerbate fire risks in the region.
