Michele Beckwith, the former acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento, has joined California Governor Gavin Newsom’s team as a deputy legal affairs secretary. Beckwith was fired by President Donald Trump shortly after she instructed a top immigration official to adhere to the Constitution during immigration raids.
Governor Newsom publicly supported Beckwith after her dismissal, posting on social media platform X, “WAKE UP, AMERICA. DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BRINK!” The governor’s office praised Beckwith’s extensive legal experience, with spokesperson Tara Gallegos stating, “Trump’s loss is California’s gain.”
Beckwith’s firing occurred after she emailed Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol chief in Southern California, emphasizing the need to follow court orders and the Constitution during operations. Despite her efforts, Bovino led a controversial raid in Sacramento days later.
Beckwith’s dismissal is part of a broader pattern of President Trump removing federal prosecutors who did not align with his agenda. In her new role, Beckwith aims to support the state’s legal affairs and uphold democratic principles. She expressed her commitment to “keeping our democracy and Constitution alive.”
