One person is dead, and a suspect is in custody for allegedly hijacking a Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus early Wednesday (September 25) morning.
The Los Angeles Police Department said that they received a report about a disturbance on a bus just before 1 a.m. When officers arrived, the bus started to drive away.
Authorities said the suspect held the bus driver at gunpoint and forced him to flee from the police, leading them on an hour-long chase through downtown Los Angeles.
The police deployed spike strips, puncturing the right tire on the bus and bringing it to a stop. The SWAT team was called and rescued the bus driver and one passenger from the bus. The suspect surrendered without further incident.
When officers checked the bus, they found a second passenger with multiple bullet wounds. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Officials have not said what led to the fatal shooting.
