A Gwinnett County police officer was killed and another seriously wounded after being shot inside a hotel room near Stone Mountain, Georgia, on Sunday (February 1), in what officials described as an unprovoked attack. The incident unfolded just after 7:30 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a possibly fraudulent hotel booking on Park Place Boulevard.
According to Gwinnett County Police, officers Pradeep Tamang, 25, and David Reed confronted 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur, who had allegedly rented the hotel room using someone else’s credit card. The officers were invited into the room by Andrews. During their conversation, Andrews reportedly pulled a handgun and opened fire on the officers without warning, killing Officer Tamang and seriously injuring Corporal Reed.
Both officers returned fire, striking Andrews, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All three men were taken to a local hospital, where Officer Tamang died from his wounds. Corporal Reed remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to statements from police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Officer Tamang, originally from Nepal, joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in spring 2025 and was engaged to be married. Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said, “These officers are heroes. They go out to the road every day and face uncertainty.” McClure also assured residents that the department “will not be deterred” in its service to the community.
The GBI has taken over the investigation, and charges against Andrews are pending. Authorities stated that Andrews has a lengthy criminal history. Once released from the hospital, Andrews will be transferred to the county jail.
Local leaders and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences and support for the officers and their families. “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis,” Kemp said in a social media post.
A donation fund has been established for the officers’ families. As the investigation continues, the community is being called to unity and compassion.
