A Garden Grove police officer was critically injured early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle during a foot chase. The incident occurred around 12:05 a.m. near Brookhurst Street and Stanford Avenue, where officers were responding to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at a 7-Eleven store.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the officers attempted to detain a man involved in the altercation, who was reportedly armed with a knife. The suspect ignored commands and fled, prompting a foot pursuit. During the chase, a vehicle traveling northbound on Brookhurst Street struck one of the officers. Garden Grove Police Lieutenant Rich Burillo confirmed that the officer, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police stated that the driver was not connected to the suspect and will not face charges. The suspect, described as a 34-year-old transient, was eventually apprehended in a nearby residential area after a lengthy search involving multiple agencies.
