Dr. Arian Mowlavi, known as “Dr. Laguna,” is facing new felony battery charges and accusations from the California medical board. The Orange County plastic surgeon is accused of botching surgeries and engaging in unprofessional conduct. Until his criminal case concludes, he is barred from performing surgeries requiring general anesthesia.
The latest medical board filing, submitted on August 25, cites 18 additional patients who allege misconduct by Mowlavi. One patient, Millie Martini, described her experience as humiliating and dangerous, leading to severe post-surgery complications. Martini recalled, “My nipples are detached; they’re black they’re oozing black,” after her surgery in August 2022. Medical records indicated she suffered from sepsis and necrotic tissue, necessitating a double mastectomy. NBC4 Investigates has been following the developments involving Mowlavi for three years, documenting numerous patient complaints.
Mowlavi, who once marketed himself as a renowned body sculptor, has denied all allegations. However, his legal troubles continue to mount. In 2023, he settled a civil lawsuit for $6 million with over 30 former patients, though he did not admit wrongdoing. Despite the settlement, Martini’s case remains unresolved, leaving her with significant medical bills.
The Orange County District Attorney’s office filed two additional felony battery charges against Mowlavi in July, related to incidents from 2021. Mowlavi pleaded not guilty to these charges, and his criminal trial is pending. Meanwhile, the medical board’s accusations include claims of gross negligence, creating false medical records, and inappropriate conduct during examinations. The Los Angeles Times reports that Mowlavi’s previous suspension lasted only 90 days, with a 10-year probation following.
The ongoing legal proceedings and patient testimonies have raised concerns about Mowlavi’s practice. Former patient Toni Arken expressed her disbelief, stating, “I feel mutilated and felt lied to.” Arken, along with other patients, accused Mowlavi of upselling unnecessary procedures and making inappropriate comments during consultations.
As Mowlavi’s criminal case unfolds, he faces an administrative law hearing in December and additional civil lawsuits. The outcome of these proceedings could significantly impact his medical career and the future of his practice.
