The estate of O.J. Simpson has agreed to pay $58 million to the family of Ron Goldman, nearly three decades after the infamous 1994 murders of Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. According to court documents, the executor of Simpson’s estate, Malcolm LaVergne, accepted the claim filed by Fred Goldman, Ron’s father, in February 2021. The Goldmans initially sought $117 million, but the estate settled for $57,997,858.12, including 30 years of accumulated interest.
Simpson, who was acquitted of the murders in a criminal trial but found liable in a civil court in 1997, was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages. However, most of that judgment remained unpaid during his lifetime. Simpson passed away in April 2024 at the age of 76.
LaVergne stated that the estate plans to raise the funds by auctioning off Simpson’s possessions, some of which were reportedly stolen. He also mentioned that the Internal Revenue Service and the state of California have claims on the estate, but Fred Goldman’s claim takes priority.
The Goldman family released a statement acknowledging the acceptance of the claim as a positive step but noted that it does not guarantee payment. They plan to monitor the probate process closely.
ABC News and Fox News reported that the settlement marks a significant development in the long-standing legal battle.
El País highlighted that Simpson’s life was marked by legal troubles, including a prison sentence for armed robbery. The settlement represents a long-awaited acknowledgment of the debt owed to the Goldman family.
