Ian Cramer, the 43-year-old son of North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Monday (December 30) for a high-speed chase that resulted in the death of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin. The incident occurred on December 6, 2023, when Ian fled from a hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, where his mother had taken him due to a mental health crisis.
During the chase, Ian drove at speeds exceeding 100 mph, even after his tires were flattened by spike strips. He eventually crashed into Deputy Martin’s patrol car, killing the 53-year-old officer who was standing behind the vehicle. Ian pleaded guilty in September to multiple charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, reckless endangerment, and drug-related offenses.
Judge Bobbi Weiler sentenced Ian to 38 years, with 10 years suspended, and credited him for time already served. She noted that Ian might not serve the full 28 years due to the lack of mandatory minimums. The judge also recommended treatment for Ian’s addiction and mental health issues.
Ian expressed remorse during the sentencing, apologizing to Deputy Martin’s family and stating, “I had no intention to do any of this. It was an accident, and I just hope that someday they can forgive me.” His mother, Kris Cramer, also apologized, acknowledging her son’s mental health struggles.
Senator Cramer has previously stated that his son suffers from severe mental disorders, including paranoia and hallucinations. He expressed disappointment in how the court handled the mental health aspect of the case but acknowledged that Ian’s choices led to the tragic outcome.
