No One Hurt in Laguna Beach Landslide

LAGUNA BEACH (CNS) – A landslide near Thousand Steps beach forced a closure of it and residents of three homes out, but no one was hurt, and the beach has since been reopened.

The landslide of about 500 cubic yards of bluff happened about 7:15 a.m. Friday near Point Place between Ninth and 10th Avenues.

Private stairways and walkways from Point Place were damaged. Authorities used a cadaver dog to check if anyone was injured in the landslide, but there were no victims.

“This was a significant bluff collapse, and we responded with an abundance of caution to ensure no one was in harm’s way,” Laguna Beach Fire Chief Niko King said. “Luckily, no one was hurt and while there is no immediate danger, it’s important for everyone to stay clear of the closed area while assessments continue.”

Officials from the city’s Building Division are assessing the stability of the land and structural integrity of the homes while a geologist checks the overall hillside conditions.

“The beach is open, but we’re asking everyone to avoid the closed area for their own safety,” marine Safety Chief Kai Bond said. “We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work through the next steps and ensure the area is safe for access.”

Part of the beach near the landside is roped off and closed for the time being.
