Nine people, including five children, were killed, and one person was seriously injured after an SUV crashed into a canal in Florida on Monday (August 5) night. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said that a 2023 Ford Explorer lost control while going around a curve on Hatton Highway in Belle Glade around 7:30 p.m.
The SUV spun off the road onto the grass shoulder, hit the guardrail, and then flipped over, landing upside down in a canal.
When first responders arrived, they found the SUV submerged in the water, with only its wheels visible. They pulled ten people from the SUV and said that four were declared dead at the scene. The others were transported to the hospital, where five others succumbed to their injuries.
Officials said that a 26-year-old man survived and remains hospitalized with severe injuries.
Investigators said that there were rainstorms in the area, but they have not determined whether the weather contributed to the tragic accident.
