Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to support schools and students affected by the wildfires in Southern California. The order, signed on Tuesday (January 14), allows displaced students to attend schools outside their districts and facilitates the use of temporary facilities for schools undergoing reconstruction. Additionally, it suspends state requirements regarding annual instructional days for schools impacted by the fires.
The executive order aims to restore normalcy for students by removing barriers to education. Newsom emphasized the state’s commitment to using all available resources to aid recovery efforts for those affected by the fires, including school-aged children.
According to the official state website, the order also extends deadlines for local control and accountability plans and requests assistance from various state agencies to help schools develop plans for housing displaced students.
California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond stated, “We must provide students with access to the best possible educational experiences,” and assured that resources and flexibility would be provided to help schools recover and rebuild.
KTLA reports that local and state officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, are coordinating efforts to clear debris and streamline rebuilding processes. At the federal level, President Joe Biden has announced financial assistance for wildfire victims and committed to covering fire response costs.
