Newsom to Deliver Final State of the State Address Live

Governor Gavin Newsom will deliver his final State of the State address live at the California State Capitol on Thursday.

After several years of providing pre-recorded speeches, Newsom will return to an in-person format. This address marks the first live delivery since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his speech, Newsom is expected to focus on California’s economic strength, reduced homelessness, and increased education funding. According to the Los Angeles Times, Newsom will highlight a 9% drop in unsheltered homelessness and emphasize the success of initiatives like the mental health program CARE Court and Proposition 1, which funds mental health and homelessness efforts.

The governor will also address housing issues, signaling a tougher stance on private equity firms buying homes, a point of rhetorical overlap with former President Donald Trump. Newsom plans to announce record per-student funding for public schools and propose merging the state Board of Education with the California Department of Education.

Political analysts, as reported by KTVU, believe this speech will serve as both a reflection on his tenure and a preview of a potential 2028 presidential campaign. Newsom aims to position California as a model for the nation, contrasting its policies with those of the Trump administration.

Newsom’s address will likely resonate beyond California, as he seeks to connect with voters in key swing states. The speech will be followed by the unveiling of his proposed budget for the next fiscal year on Friday.
