Newsom Seeks DOJ Records Amid Investigation

California Governor Gavin Newsom is requesting records related to a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation involving him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Newsom’s legal affairs secretary, David Sapp, sent a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, seeking “all documents and records, including but not limited to memoranda, emails, text messages, and Signal messages” pertaining to the investigation. The request asks for a response by July 6.

The investigation, initiated by President Donald Trump’s DOJ, has seen federal agents contacting family, friends, and former employees of the Newsoms. Newsom claims the investigation is politically motivated, tied to his potential presidential run in 2028. He accused Trump of using the DOJ as a tool against political adversaries. Newsom stated in a video that Trump “hates that I consistently call him out” and called the president “the most corrupt in American history.”

The investigation reportedly involves multiple probes, including tax activity related to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit organizations and activities of Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson. Williamson, who pleaded guilty to charges unrelated to Newsom, was offered leniency for information but had none to provide.

Newsom’s office believes subpoenas were issued to financial institutions linked to the Newsoms. However, they have not seen any subpoenas directly. The DOJ and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California have declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

Newsom, in his video, asserted that the investigation is a “fishing expedition” with no crime found. He emphasized his openness to scrutiny but urged Trump to “leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta.” Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker and advocate for gender equity, echoed these sentiments, criticizing Trump’s tactics.

The governor’s office continues to pursue a public records request for all documents from the DOJ related to the investigation. The situation remains tense as the deadline for the DOJ’s response approaches.
